Star Awards 2010 (红星大奖 2010): THE RESULTS

star-awards-logo

The annual Star Awards is here again! Has it really been a year? Time flies. It is also been a while since I put something in this blog and thought I really need to start pay more attentions to this blog (considering that my daytime job is finally on a secured place).

Hopefully, this is a new “start” is my motivation to start writing again.

So, here’s the results for 2010 Star Awards.

* 2010 Best Drama

Together ( 当我们同在一起)

There isn’t a surprise in this category (well, at least for me). I know a lot of the buzz is for “The Housewives Holiday”, but I was rooting for “Together”.

* 2010 Best Actor

Chen Hanwei (陈汉伟)

In all honesty, just like last year, I was hoping for Tay Ping Hui to grab this award. His performance in “The Ultimatum” was brilliant.

But, with “auntie-look Ye Zhengkang” from Chen Hanwei, Tay Pinghui is really up with tough opponent.  With 4th win, Chen Hanwei will soon stand side by side in “Best Actor” record with Xie Shaoguang.

* 2010 Best Actress

Chen Liping ((陈莉萍)

She made it again! She is truly a dark horse in the catagory (since all the focuses were on Ann Kok and Jeannette Aw). Veteran rules! 🙂

* 2010 Best Supporting Actor

Zhu Hou Ren (朱厚任)

Well deserved award! He was brilliant  in “Reunion Dinner”. Adorable yet heartwarming character at the same time. Although, I agree that all nominees delivered their own briliant perfomances, none deserved this award more than Zhu Houren.

* 2010 Best Supporting Actresses

Constance Song (宋怡霏)

This year is truly a “veteran” year! No, she is not a famous star and no, she is your typical idol, but she always delivered a great perfomance for every characters ever thrown at her. Consider her tough opponents in this category, she was the dark horse, but she made it at the end! Another well deserved award.

* 2010 Top 10 Most Popular Actors (alphabetically)

1.  Bryan Wong (王禄江)

2.  Chen Han Wei (陈 汉玮)

3.  Dai Yang Tian (戴阳天) – 1st win

4. Dennis Chew (周崇庆) – 1st win

5.  Elvin Ng (黄俊 雄)

6.  Guo Liang (郭亮) – when was the last time he made it to the top 10?

7.  Qi Yuwu (戚玉武)

8. Tay Ping Hui (郑斌辉) – 9th win

9.  Zhang Yao Dong (张耀栋)

10. Zheng Ge Ping (郑各评)

With both Christopher Lee and Mark Lee ascend to the elite pedestal, 2 spots open up for grab. Again, like all previous years, this is one catagory that you really can’t predict. All 20 actors had equal chance until the very last minute. This year mark the 1st nomination and 1st win for newcomer Dai Yangtian. With smooth sailing, Tay Ping Hui will join the elite rank in 2012. Trailing close behind him is Chen Hanwei with 7th win this year.

* 2009 Top 10 Most Popular Actresses (again, alphabetically)

1.  Felicia Chin (陈靓瑄)

2.  Jeanette Aw (欧萱)

3.  Jessica Liu (刘芷绚)

4.  Joanne Peh (白薇秀)

5. Michelle Chia (谢韵仪)

6.  Quan Yi Fong (权怡凤)

7.  Rui En (瑞恩)

8.  Vivian Lai (赖怡 伶)

9.  Xiang Yun (向 云) – 10th win

10. Yvonne Lim (林湘萍)

The ladies list is the same as last year, except for Ivy Lee. She is replaced by Michelle Chia this year. Xiang Yun scored her 10th! Next year, she will be up at the pedestal for “All Time Favorites”

Interesting fact: it seems the ladies and the men are alternating the spotlight for “All Time Favorites”. ’09 was Huang Biren (& no male), ’10 is Mark and Christopher Lee (& no female), ’11 will be Xiang Yun (& none of the male will qualify), and if everything goes well, 2012 will be Tay Pinghui’s turn (& none of the female will qualify).

So, that will be all my comments. Again,  I am not too into other categories as some of them I am not even familiar with. I am not to go open that can of worm just yet…: D

For Best Theme Song (Drama) is Together《当我们同在一起》 – 《我们》 by  Kelvin Tan Wei Lian 陈伟联. It is my favorite so I am happy! 🙂

For all the winners, once again, CONGRATULATIONS! For all the rest, no worries. We will have next year!

Star Awards 2009 (红星大奖 2009): THE RESULTS

star-awards-logo

The hot topic for the week is the winners for Star Awards 2009…. This is a little bit late I know but since I’m not physically in Singapore, I don’t have the chance to watch until today. You know, there is one thing that I have to mention, on Sunday, my post on “Star Awards 2009” hit a record breaking 504! To say that I was in for surprise would be the biggest understatement…My sincere “Thank you” for all who had stop by.

So enough about my blabbering, here are the results for this year Star Award and my brief comments.

* 2009 Best Drama

The Little Nyonya (小娘惹)

I was expecting this blockbuster would win the award. So, there isn’t a surprise for this winner.

* 2009 Best Actor

Chen Hanwei (陈汉伟)

chen-hanwei

As I said before, there is absolutely no room for doubt in his acting skills. He was wonderful in “By My Side”. However, to be completely honest, I was still hoping for Tay Ping Hui at the very last minute. He was equally good as “Huang Kaijie”.

* 2009 Best Actress

Joanne Peh (白薇秀)

joanne-peh

Wow! This is surprising. I really thought Jeannette Aw would win the award. Alas, it was the “Dark Horse” that emerged as the winner. She WAS very good in the 2nd half of the series as “HuangYuzhu”.  Way to go, Joanne!

* 2009 Best Supporting Actor

Chow Chuming (周初明)

chewchormeng

Yeah! He is the winner. My mind was split in this category early on. But I truly believe this is a very well deserving win for him. I can’t think of any other actor for “Huang Kaida”. On more personal note, it was sad to see how his illness started to catch up with him. I had goose bumps when he delivered his speech. I wish all the best for Chuming. Keep up the fight and when you get tired, looks behind you for you will always have your supporters right there with you.

* 2009 Best Supporting Actresses

Xiang Yun (向云) & Ng Hui (黄慧)

xiang-yunng-hui

There were many surprises associated with Star Awards 2009, but this category had to be the most surprising category for the night. Never in 15 years of Star Awards’ history double awards were given at the same time in the acting category.  I guess even the judges can’t make up their mind between Xiang Yun and Ng Hui.

* 2009 Best Newcomer

Dai Yangtian (戴阳天)

daiyangtian

Given his popularity, I am not a bit surprise. He was the hot prediction for this category.

* 2009 Top 10 Most Popular Actors (alphabetically)

1.  Bryan Wong (王禄江)

2.  Chen Han Wei (陈 汉玮)

3.  Christopher Lee (铭顺) – 10th win

4.  Elvin Ng (黄俊 )

5.  Henry Thia (程旭) – boy! I was in for so many surprises this year.

6.  Mark Lee (李国煌) – 10th win

7.  Pornsak

8.  Qi Yuwu (戚玉武)

9.  Tay Ping Hui (郑斌辉)

10. Zheng Ge Ping (郑各评) – 1st nomination in 21 years and 1st win! Wow!

This category always gave people some dose of heart attack. There wasn’t prediction whatsoever. All 20 actors had equal chance until the very last minute. Talk about heart attack! The “war” between Christopher Lee and Mark Lee is finally over! Both secured their 10th awards and will be sharing the stage next year for “All Time Favorite Awards”. Trailing close behind them is Tay Ping Hui with 8th win this year. Alright! Chen Hanwei is once again back on the list (6th win this year).

* 2009 Top 10 Most Popular Actresses (again, alphabetically)

1.  Felicia Chin (陈靓瑄)

2.  Ivy Lee (锦梅)

3.  Jeanette Aw (欧萱)

4.  Jessica Liu (刘芷)

5.  Joanne Peh (白薇秀)

6.  Quan Yi Fong (权怡凤)

7.  Rui En (瑞恩)

8.  Vivian Lai (赖怡 )

9.  Xiang Yun (向 )

10. Yvonne Lim (林湘萍) – surprise! Her last win was almost a decade ago.

The same applies for female category. It is also giving the same dose of heart attack as the male category. Huang Biren won her 10th in 2007 so she is this year “All Time Favorite”. However, none of the female will make it to next year “All Time Favorite”. Xiang Yun comes close with 9th win this year. With a smooth journey, she will join the elite league in 2011. The second one that comes close is Ivy Lee with her 7th win. The rest of them still have an average 5 years to catch up.

So, that will be all my comments. I am not too into other categories as some of them I am not even familiar with. I am not to go open that can of worm just yet…: D One worth mention though is the fact that Guo Liang wins “The Best Host”. It was long overdue. If you watched ‘Celebritea Break’, you’ll know why I said that. He is one of the best!

For all the winners, once again, CONGRATULATIONS! For all the rest, no worries. We will have next year!

Singapore SBC/TCS/MediaCorp Reviews

It is already the 3rd day of 2009. How is everyone New Year Celebration? Pass that we will all be getting ready for the first Monday in 2009…. Hopefully things will go much smoother in the new year!

That aside, I really need to find more time to update my blog. Now that I finally graduate from my Masters degree (YAY!!), I hope  I can find more time to do so.

Since I am not currently watching any TVB serials, my reviews’ section will switch gear to Singapore drama reviews. For those who familiar with S’pore serial will understand why my post titled “SBC/TCS/Mediacorp”. For those who don’t, the short explanation is Singapore broadcasting company had change its name 3 times. Prior to 1994, it was SBC (Singapore Broadcasting Center). 1994 – 2001, it was TCS (Television Corporation of Singapore) and from 2001 to present day is MediaCorp. Thus, my reviews will span between these three era.

Generally speaking, my “root” of drama started with SBC’s production of “Good Morning, Sir!”, starring Chen Li Ping and Li Nanxing, back in late 80’s.From then on, S’pore productions had always been 1st priority compared to TVB or any other countries’ production. Even to this day, any MediaCorp productions will has my 1st attention before I move on to another drama, especially if the casts included my favorite actors and/or veteran actors/actress of the 90’s.

When it comes to reviews though, it is natural that I have more drama serials’ collections which I can write about. So for the next half of 2009, I will most probably write more MediaCorp’s reviews than TVB’s reviews. As on which S’pore reviews will I write, I really don’t have schedule planned. Alice had ask me for 1994’s “The Magnate” (casts: Li Nanxing, Ivy Lee, Chan Hanwei, and Cassandra See)…. Alice, I will try my best. 🙂
